Ms Tina Hung
Deputy Chief Executive Officer, National Council of Social Service, Co-Chair, Advisory Committee, 9th TAS Conference

Greetings from Singapore!

We are more than delighted to host the 9th TAS Conference in our tropical country and we thank the World Psychiatric Association (Stigma Section) for giving us the opportunity to do so.

Mental health stigma is a global issue and we need to come together to tackle it. We need to shift mindsets and help society to look beyond the diagnostic labels of mental illnesses and to let people with mental health issues (PMIs) into our communities and hearts.

With that in mind, we have chosen the theme “Beyond the Label – Towards an Inclusive Society” for this year’s conference. This theme is closely connected to the recent launch of Singapore’s first national anti-stigma campaign – Beyond the Label – in September 2018. We have started the conversation, getting persons in recovery and their families to share their lived experience, encouraging youths to reach out to their peers in need, educating the public about common mental health conditions, and encouraging our society to be more inclusive.

The role of individuals living with mental health issues has evolved in Singapore, and we believe, in many countries around the world. Today, PMIs are no longer passive recipients of care. Some have gone on to become certified peer support specialists to help other peers get back on their feet, while others are helping to spread awareness as mental health advocates.

In the 2019 TAS conference, we hope to bring together like-minded people to share and discuss how we may further create the environment for PMIs to thrive and contribute to society. We trust that you will find topics of interest within the five tracks of the conference:

  • Social inclusion in the workplace and community
  • The power of the media and social movements
  • Professionals, policy and practice
  • Recovery and people with lived experience
  • Skills-based workshops

We hope the conference will not only be a platform to learn and exchange knowledge but one to meet old friends, make new connections, and forge collaborations in our fight against mental health stigma.

We look forward to seeing you at the 9th TAS conference! And to our foreign delegates, may you have a pleasant stay in our beautiful city!
